Course Syllabus

Week 1  (January 16-23)
"Waiting for fate." Writing a mini-saga - a story in 50 words. Sentence structure. Proverbs: Look before you leap! The early bird catches the worm! Out of sight, out of mind! Never say die! Let sleeping dogs lie! Better late than never!

Week 2 (January 23-30)
"How do you make a good first impression?" Identifying main ideas and supporting details in the text. Using mobile dictionaries for learning word forms. Discussing the proverb "All is not gold that glitters". Organizing and developing a paragraph. Writing a "how to" paragraph.

Week 3 (January 30-February 6)
"The most amazing place!" Travel blog. Punctuation. Using Google maps to find and describe pictures. Descriptive language. Writing a blog post "Why you need to experience Moscow or any other city/country".

Week 4 (February 6-13)
"What makes food taste good?" Descriptive language. Use and placement of adjectives. Writing a descriptive paragraph. 

Week 5 (February 13-20)
"Jamie’s perfect omelette." Reading and discussing the biographies of famous chefs in mobile Britannica. Instructions/recipes. Sequence adverbs. Digital storytelling-instruction.

Week 6 (February 20-27)
"What does it take to be successful?" Adjective +preposition collocations. Discussing the questions: "Why is it important to learn English? Who will you speak English with in the future? Where will you speak English in the future?" Writing an opinion paragraph. 

Week 7 (February 27-March 6)
"How has technology affected your life?" Discussing TV habits. TV vocabulary. Synonyms. Parallel structure. Writing a summary and an opinion paragraph.    

Week8 (March 6-13)
"Why do people help each other?" Discussing the question: "How altruistic do you think you are? Give examples to support your opinion. Why do you think some people are more altruistic than others?" Phrasal verbs. Gerunds and infinitives. Stating reasons and giving examples. Writing a paragraph with reasons and examples.

Week 9 (March 13-20)
Personal letter. The Unified State Exam: Evaluation criteria. Rules of letter writing (etiquette). Logic. paragraph division. Normative structure. The plan of the letter. 

Week 10 (March 20-27)
Personal letter. Aspects of the task.  Linking words. Ways of expressing emotions/advice. strategies of increasing/reducing the number of words. 

Week 11 (March 27 -April 03)
"Does advertising help or harm us? " Answering to the question: " Some people say that advertising is a “necessary evil.” What does this mean? Do you agree? Why or why not? 
"  Distinguishing facts from opinions. Suffixes. Writing a letter to the editor. WebQuest "A Startup Restaurant" 

Week 12 (April 03-10)
"The Theory of Everything". Film review: structure and vocabulary. Film genres. Making and guessing movie riddles. Writing a film review.

Week 13 (April 10-17)
"How can we make cities better places to live?" Making inference from the text. Participles as adjectives. The passive voice. Writing a problem/solution essay: structure. Thesis statement.   

Week 14 (April 17-24)
"Do people communicate better now than in the past?" Identifying the author's purpose, audience and tone. Prefixes(a-, dis-, im-, non-, bi-, con-, de-, in-, inter-, out-, pre, re-, self- etc.). Writing an opinion essay with a counterargument. 

April 24 
WebQuest presentation. End-of-course test.
